![]() Regularly there are power pellets that turn the ghosts blue and allow Pac-Man to eat them. At certain sections the colour of the game environment changes. Some ghosts are asleep and only wake up when Pac-Man is nearby. There are different types of ghosts with different behaviour in the maze and these need to be avoided, sometimes also by returning when the glitch is not too close. Fruits can be eaten for score multipliers. By eating many dots in succession, without halting or following a broken trail, a combo can be built up and Pac-Man's speed increases. There are also some exits to the left and the right of the maze to appear on the other side. He can move in any direction where there is a passage and eats dots for points. The game uses many elements of the classic Pac-Man gameplay. It is referred to as the kill screen or the split-screen level and it is impossible to beat. The title refers to the map 256 glitch of the original arcade game where upon reaching level 256 the right side of the screen turns into a mess of letters and numbers while the left side remains normal. There are sometimes also small glitches in the regular playfield. The glitch is shown as a garble of code and moves at a consistent speed at the bottom of the screen or out of sight as Pac-Man attempts to outrun it. The goal is to score points and survive as long as possible while being chased by a glitch that eats up the maze. The game is shown from a slightly diagonal view instead of top-down and the camera sometimes zoom in, making the gameplay resemble a 2D game more. Pac-Man needs to be guided through a maze with a fixed width and an endless vertical distance with a lay-out randomized for each session. The concept is identical to the original game: it is a 3D endless maze game that combines the maze mechanics of the classic Pac-Man with the endless environments while being chased by a persistent threat. It’s playable on both Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.Pac-Man 256 is an updated version of the mobile game Pac-Man 256, for PC and consoles. If you wish to grab a download of PAC-MAN 256 head over to the Xbox Store. But how about you? Did you play it back in the day, or do you fancy playing it now after reading my words? Let us know in the comments! It’s a PAC experience which didn’t just bring fun in the single player, but really came alive in multiplayer. These then are my memories of playing PAC-MAN 256 back in 2016 and onwards. ![]() Special power pills appear to allow you the chance to revive your fellow players, and seeing him frantically trying to reach the revive pill while dodging the glitch and all the pursuing ghosts is part of what made this game special. ![]() So, as he was being a chicken, zooming about the map, eating dots and ghosts, inevitably one of us would make a mistake and wind up dead. ![]() It was this that allowed for some fond gaming memories too as I spent a great deal of time playing 256 with my son – I honestly think that playing games like this with him, where the fun isn’t tied to the latest whizz bang graphics, is part of why he plays all sorts of games today. This achievement glitched for me, sadly, and is the only one in the game I didn’t get. This kind of RPG-lite addition made PAC-MAN 256 much longer lasting, for me at least, especially as there was an achievement for upgrading all the power-ups to max level. As you play through the game and amass points, these points can be used to upgrade the power-ups, making them hit harder and last longer. ![]() Yes, this time around, in addition to the standard power pills that allow PAC-MAN to eat the dots, there are others such as lasers that bounce around corners and kill anything they hit, tornadoes that can be set loose, clones that can attack your enemies and more. The power-ups also received an overhaul, with the addition of new types that can be upgraded. Keeping moving, climbing the screen, is very important. As you get higher up the vertically scrolling screen, the bottom of the level begins to be consumed by a glitch, and if the glitched section of the screen catches up to PAC-MAN, it’s instant death. The big change to the gameplay in 256 involves the game starting to glitch out as you progress through the levels. ![]()
